The Calico Project

Attempting to collect all 327 known calico patterns involves unique challenges. While calico collectors are eternally grateful to Wilfred Morgan, Beatrice Lorah and Lester Lorah for cataloguing and drawing the 327 listed calico patterns, modern calico collectors are simultaneously vexed by the limitations of these calico pattern drawings. The calico section of the Guidelines includes the pattern drawings and very little text compared to the rest of the Guidelines. While the stencil section imparts nuggets of information about the colors and sizes of the various numbered stencil patterns, the calico section presents us with drawings and not much else. In a modern age where collectors photograph and digitally scan buttons, the lack of color reference photos of the various calico patterns can be extremely frustrating.

Thomas Skovronsky and Inga Ladd have begun work on a new calico book. As of February 2014, Thomas has collected 275 out of 327 patterns. Inga has collected 225 out of 327 patterns. George Gauthier, a respected calico collector, has collected 287 out of 327 patterns. Presumably, all the calico patterns existed in 1939 and 1940 when Wilfred Morgan published his pamphlets. Ironically, however, Pattern #1 is missing from all modern collections. Pattern #1 is not the only missing pattern. Many patterns do not appear in modern collections. Please help the authors gather images for the Calico Project. If you have any of the patterns listed below, please scan the button at 600-800 dpi and email the image, your name and your address to chinabuttonexchange@gmail.com. Emailing the image in response to this request will impart your permission to publish the image in the forthcoming book. Obviously, please share images of unlisted patterns also.

Many of these patterns are difficult to identify. Please refer to George Gauthier's article to assist with identifcation.
